High Plains Drifters
Pronghorn are sometimes curious animals, investigating anything strange or new in their environment. Relying on their speed to get them out of trouble, pronghorn are the fastest land mammals in North America, reaching speeds in excess of 50 m.p.h. They are the only ungulate in North America that originated and evolved here. Like the bison, pronghorn once numbered some 60 million animals, but by the turn of the century their population had been reduced to under 15,000. Now numbering over a million animals, pronghorn are found primarily on the high plains of the American west, surviving on a diet of sagebrush, grasses and wildflowers.
